Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas: Bold Casting or Hollywood Overreach?
In November, it was announced that Angelina Jolie will star as Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín’s new film Maria. While the project is already generating buzz for its exploration of the opera legend’s final days, some fans are raising eyebrows at the casting choice.
Jolie is undoubtedly a Hollywood heavyweight, but portraying La Divina—one of the most complex and celebrated figures in music history—is no small feat. Critics have questioned whether Jolie, with no connection to opera or classical music, can authentically capture Callas's essence, both as a performer and as a woman who lived for her art.
Larraín, known for Jackie and Spencer, has a history of blending artistry with introspection, but even his bold direction can’t guarantee success. Will this be a respectful homage or another instance of Hollywood simplifying a deeply nuanced story?
Adding to the skepticism, while the film will feature original recordings of Callas’s voice, some argue this could undermine Jolie’s portrayal, leaving the audience comparing her performance to the real Callas—a comparison unlikely to work in Jolie’s favor.
